Field Tour of Oil & Gas Development in Alberta, Canada

Saturday September 18th - Sunday September 19th

For decades the Alberta Province of Canada has been actively developing oil and gas resources along the Canadian Rocky Mountain Front. We will be visiting Canada’s Front Range, just north of Waterton, where oil and gas development dominates the landscape. We will tour the area to see first hand what the clearcuts, roads, powerlines, pipelines, gathering points, distribution centers, sweetening plants, and other oil and gas related development looks like on the landscape. We will be accompanied by a Canadian wildlife biologist who has been living in the area for decades and studying the oil and gas development's impacts to native wildlife.

For anyone who wonders what the real footprint of oil and gas development is, what it looks like, and how it impacts the local communities and wildlife, this trip is indispensable. Please join us!

Saturday
We will carpool from Missoula to Pincher Creek where we will meet with Brian Horejsi, a local wildlife biologist. That afternoon we will spend with Brian discussing impacts of the oil and gas development to wildlife, while in the field exploring the canyons and foothills where oil and gas development has sprung up.

We will spend Saturday evening in the town of Pincher Creek, where hotels, restaurants, or camp sites are available.

Sunday
We will reconoiter in the morning for breakfast and then spend the earlier part of the day exploring the rest of the Shell Waterton Sweetening Plant, the well sites, road system and other oil and gas infrastructure. We will then head back to Missoula in the early afternoon to arrive home by dinnertime.

Logistics
Please register for this trip by September 15th at the latest. Register by contacting Cameron at 542.7343 or by emailing cameron@wildrockies.org. We need at least 8 people to make this trip cost and time efficient, otherwise we will have to cancel or reschedule the trip. Upon registration, we will arrange carpools and the meeting time and place in Missoula. If you are interested in joining us but will not be leaving from Missoula, you are welcome to come along. Contact us and we can arrange a meeting time and place in Pincher Creek.

Food and lodging is available in Pincher Creek, as are camp sites. Several restaurants are available to choose from for dinner on Saturday night and breakfast on Sunday. Lunches should be made ready to pack, as we will either be walking or driving during lunchtime. Car snacks are also handy.

This trip will not involve any difficult hiking. We will primarily be driving to sites and going for short exploratory walks.

What to Bring:
  • Passport and Photo Identification for the border crossing
  • Camping gear if you're planning to camp including: tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, etc.
